Travis picking, named after the legendary Merle Travis, is finger picking with drive! It suits most any style with a strong 4/4 beat, including a lot of folk, rockabilly and swing jazz tunes. Guitarists have long enjoyed the way it incorporates a steady rhythm (played with the thumb), along with chord tones and/or melody (played with the fingers).
This is a new course for beginners wanting to learn travis picking. We’ll go over the basics and try using this versatile style in a number of folk and rockabilly tunes. Spoiler alert—we’ll also try it out on a simple swing tune. But don’t worry, we won’t go off the deep end.
Guitarists should be familiar with basic open chords although having some exposure to swing chords would be helpful. Some exposure to travis picking or other finger style guitar would also be helpful.
